Greenland Heli-Skiing: An Unforgettable Adventure in East Greenland
Embarking on a journey to experience Greenland heli-skiing is more than just a ski trip; it’s an adventure into one of the most remote and stunning places on Earth. Hosted by Expedition Engineering, a company dedicated to running unique trips to wild, less-traveled destinations, this article dives deep into what makes East Greenland a premier heli-skiing destination. From the incredible terrain and snow conditions to the vibrant local culture and logistics, this comprehensive guide will prepare and inspire you for your own Greenland heli-skiing adventure.
Why Choose Greenland for Heli-Skiing?
Greenland is a place that has captured the hearts of many adventurers, including us at Expedition Engineering. The moment you leave Iceland behind and fly towards Greenland, the modern world seems to fade away. Below, the vast sea ice, towering glaciers, and jagged peaks paint a picture of a raw, wild landscape unlike any other.
Greenland’s terrain is a skier’s playground. The peaks in East Greenland generally rise to about 1,500 meters and feature rugged, rocky formations surrounded by expansive glaciers. Most ski runs traverse glaciated terrain, showcasing dramatic crevasses and towering mountaineering peaks. Skiing here isn’t just about descending a slope; it’s about embarking on a journey through varied features, including open slopes, icy sections, and vast glaciers.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Greenland heli skiing is the breathtaking views. From the summit, you get 360-degree panoramas of fjords, the Greenlandic ice cap, and deep blue waters dotted with icebergs. These vistas are unlike anything found in other ski destinations, making every run a unique and awe-inspiring experience. Read more on why you should go heli-skiing in Greenland.

A Playground of Diverse Terrain
East Greenland offers a spectacular variety of terrain for heli-skiers. Many runs feature consistent glacier slopes at about 35 degrees—perfect for cruising while soaking in the natural beauty around you. For those seeking more adrenaline, there are also steep runs that challenge even the most experienced skiers.
Every trip reveals new discoveries. On past adventures, we’ve stumbled upon stunning ice caves and traditional Greenlandic summer and winter houses along the coast, adding a rich cultural layer to the skiing experience. These elements make Greenland heli-skiing more than just about the slopes; it’s about exploring a living, breathing landscape steeped in history and tradition.
The Unique Climate and Snow Conditions of East Greenland
East Greenland’s maritime climate contributes to some of the best snow conditions in the world. The region experiences stable temperatures and frequent snowfall, which leads to consistent, high-quality snow. The snowpack is generally stable, making it ideal for heli-skiing.
March and May are two prime months for heli-skiing in East Greenland, each offering distinct snow conditions:
- March: Expect deep, ankle to boot-top powder snow with temperatures ranging from -15°C to -5°C. March also offers the magical opportunity to witness the Northern Lights, as the nights are still dark enough for spectacular displays.
- May: The snow transitions into corn or “fern” snow, typical of spring conditions. Temperatures are milder, ranging from -5°C to +5°C, making for cruisy, fun skiing days under longer daylight hours.
These seasonal variations mean you can tailor your Greenland heli-skiing trip to your preferred snow type and temperature range, whether you’re chasing powder or spring corn snow.

Living and Skiing in East Greenland: The Logistics
Our trips are hotel-based in Tasiilaq, the main town of East Greenland with a population of about 2,000 people. This town is not only the gateway to some of the best heli skiing terrain but also a cultural hub with a rich Greenlandic heritage.
Accessing East Greenland requires a flight via Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport, followed by a two-hour flight from Keflavik to Kulusuk, Greenland. Upon arrival in Kulusuk, guests immediately begin their skiing adventure. We provide a comprehensive avalanche and helicopter safety briefing right at the start to ensure everyone is comfortable and prepared for the week ahead.
Accommodation and Amenities
The Amasalik Hotel, situated on a hill overlooking Tasiilaq and the fjord, serves as our base camp. This comfortable hotel offers everything needed for a cozy stay, including communal spaces to relax, a sauna to unwind after skiing, and a dining area that serves all meals. Rooms can be twin-share or private, depending on your preference. The hotel’s location offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and fjords, with icebergs often frozen into the water below.
Beyond skiing, Tasiilaq offers cultural experiences such as visiting the local museum and watching artisans carve traditional items out of stone, wood, and bone. Walking among the icebergs and interacting with the locals provides a glimpse into everyday life in this remote settlement.

Helicopter Operations and Safety
Our heli skiing program uses the Star B3 helicopters, the same models employed in Canada and Alaska for heli-skiing. These helicopters meet rigorous industry safety standards and are piloted by experienced, certified professionals, including the helicopter company owner who is Greenlandic and shares valuable local knowledge.
Each trip includes two fully certified guides, either from the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) or the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations (IFMGA). Safety equipment such as airbags, transceivers, probes, and shovels are provided and are industry standard for heli-skiing adventures.
What to Expect on Your Greenland Heli Skiing Trip
Our Greenland heli-skiing trips typically last eight days, with two trips offered annually in March and late May. The group size is intentionally kept small for quality and safety: four guests per guide, split into two groups sharing one helicopter.
The skiing program is flexible and adapts daily based on weather, snow conditions, and group preferences. Some days focus on maximizing vertical drops and skiing closer to town, while others involve exciting explorations to rarely skied or completely new terrain further afield. These exploration days are often the most memorable, offering a true sense of adventure and discovery.
The first day usually serves as a gentle introduction, allowing guests to get comfortable with their gear, the helicopter, and the environment. From there, the skiing ramps up, with each run offering a unique journey through varied landscapes and snow conditions.

Required Skier Ability
Because Greenland heli-skiing takes place in a remote and sometimes unpredictable environment, we require participants to be advanced or expert skiers. Specifically, you should be confident skiing any black diamond run at a ski resort in all types of conditions—not just groomed trails but variable and challenging snow. This level of competence ensures safety and enjoyment throughout the trip.
The Cultural and Adventure Aspects of Greenland Heli Skiing
What truly sets Greenland heli-skiing apart is the blend of incredible skiing with a deep connection to the culture and environment. East Greenland’s isolation has preserved a traditional way of life for its inhabitants. For much of the year, the region is cut off by thick sea ice, which freezes the fjords and allows locals to dog sled, hunt, and fish in time-honored ways.
Visitors have the chance to witness and engage with this culture, from watching traditional carving to experiencing local life in Tasiilaq. The sea ice also shapes the landscape and lifestyle, creating a living environment that feels untouched by modern tourism.
Each trip is more than a ski vacation; it’s a chance to immerse yourself in a unique adventure where every day brings new discoveries. Guests often return to Greenland for multiple trips, drawn back by the land’s captivating beauty and the people who call it home.

Why Greenland Heli Skiing Should Be Your Next Adventure
Greenland heli skiing offers an unparalleled combination of world-class skiing, breathtaking scenery, and rich cultural experiences. The remote and rugged nature of East Greenland provides a playground for advanced skiers seeking both challenge and beauty, while the warmth and tradition of the local community enhance the adventure.
From the moment you take off from Iceland to the last run down to the ocean, Greenland heli-skiing is a journey like no other. It’s a place where every run is a story, every day an exploration, and every moment a chance to connect with one of the most pristine places on Earth.
